Preview build — page text is a draft awaiting human review. Code badges come from real compiles. The flasher is real but not yet hardware-tested; the Playground is still a preview.

Phone alerts: a push notification doorbell

Today you build: A doorbell button that pings your phone

  • Read 5 min
  • Set up ntfy 4 min
  • Wire the button 2 min
  • Upload & test 5 min
  • Try it 14 min

Community draft — report a mistake

Day 6’s doorbell only rings in the room it’s in. Today the same button sends a notification to your phone, wherever you are.

ntfy in one minute

ntfy is a free, open-source notification service. You pick a topic name; anything POSTed to ntfy.sh/<topic> pops up on every phone subscribed to it. No account, no API key.

  1. Install the ntfy app (Android or iOS).
  2. Tap + and subscribe to a topic. Make it long and random, like doorbell-7f3k9q2xw1 — anyone who guesses the name can read and send to it.
  3. Put the same topic in NTFY_TOPIC in the sketch, with your Wi-Fi details from day 17.

Wiring

  • Push button between D4 and GND (INPUT_PULLUP, just like day 3).
  • The blue LED on GPIO 2 lights while the message is being sent.

How it works

HTTPClient http;
http.begin(String("http://ntfy.sh/") + NTFY_TOPIC);
http.addHeader("Title", "Doorbell");
int code = http.POST("Someone is at the door");
  • HTTPClient makes web requests, the same way your browser does.
  • POST sends the message as the body. Title and Tags headers decorate the notification (the bell tag adds a bell icon).
  • The server answers 200 when it accepted the message. Any other number (or a negative one, meaning no connection) is printed so you can see what went wrong.

Don’t spam yourself

A child pressing the button 40 times sends 40 notifications. COOLDOWN_MS ignores presses for 30 s after a successful alert. Every alert project needs this — gas alarms, tank alarms and power-cut alerts send once, then remind slowly.

When the internet is down

If Wi-Fi or the internet is down, the POST fails and nothing reaches your phone. For alarms that really matter, keep a local buzzer as well (the cold storage alert does both), or use SMS over a GSM module.

Try it

  • Send an alert when day 10’s DHT22 reads above 40 °C.
  • Add a Priority: high header for urgent alerts.
  • See the power-cut alert project for a real-world use.

You’re done when…

  • The Serial Monitor (115200) shows Ready — press the button.
  • One press blinks the blue LED, prints ntfy answered 200, and your phone shows a Doorbell notification within a few seconds.
  • Pressing again within 30 s prints Pressed again — still in the 30 s cool-down, not sending, and no second notification arrives.

Arduino IDE: keep fr_settings.h in the same folder as the .ino (tab menu → New Tab, same name).

fr_settings.hArduino C++
// fr_settings.h — FlashReady on-board settings (Wi-Fi name, phone number, ...) over USB.
//
// Why: the pre-built file on flashready.in is the same for everyone, so your own settings
// can't be inside it. Instead the board asks for them over USB serial and keeps them in
// its EEPROM. If you use Arduino IDE you can still type them into the constants in the
// sketch — this file then changes nothing except a 2-second pause at start-up.
//
// The protocol, in plain words (one text line each way, ending in \n, at 115200 baud):
// 1. Right after Serial.begin(115200) the board prints
//       FR?SETTINGS v1 keys=wifi_ssid,wifi_pass missing=wifi_pass
// "missing" lists the required settings that still have no real value.
// 2. If nothing is missing it listens for 2 seconds and then carries on. If something is
// missing it keeps listening, printing the line again every 2 seconds, for up to
// 30 seconds; then it carries on anyway and the sketch skips whatever needs the
// missing value (an alarm still sounds, it just can't send the SMS).
//  3. The flasher answers   FR!SET wifi_ssid=My%20Home&wifi_pass=secret
// (values URL-encoded). The board stores them and answers FR!OK, then carries on with
// the new values. Errors: FR!ERR unknown <key>, FR!ERR long <key> (nothing is stored).
// A key that is left out keeps its stored value; "key=" (empty) removes it.
// "FR!SET" with nothing after it means "carry on now": FR!OK, nothing is stored.
// 4. FR!CLEAR wipes everything that was stored, answers FR!OK and keeps listening.
//  Other lines are ignored.
//
// A stored value wins over the constant in the sketch. A constant that is still a
// placeholder ("YOUR_SSID", "your-wifi", "+91XXXXXXXXXX") or empty counts as not set.
//
// EEPROM block at FR_SETTINGS_ADDR: 'F' 'R' 0x01, length (uint16, low byte first), then
// "key=value\n" lines. Uses FR_SETTINGS_SIZE bytes; move FR_SETTINGS_ADDR with a #define
// before the #include if your sketch uses EEPROM for something else.
//
// Use in a sketch:
//   const char* WIFI_SSID = "YOUR_SSID";
//   FrSetting SETTINGS[] = { {"wifi_ssid", &WIFI_SSID, true} };   // key, constant, required
//   void setup() { Serial.begin(115200); frSettingsBegin(SETTINGS); ... WiFi.begin(WIFI_SSID, ...); }
// After frSettingsBegin() each constant points at the value to use ("" if none is set).
