Fix Thonny “Couldn’t find the device automatically”
Thonny sees no MicroPython board. Install MicroPython first, use a data cable, pick the right interpreter and port, and close other serial apps.

Thonny connects to MicroPython’s interactive prompt over USB serial. If it cannot find a board, either no MicroPython is running yet, or the serial port is not reachable.
Quick fix — try in order
- 1
Install MicroPython on the board
A new Pico has no MicroPython. Hold BOOTSEL, plug in, and copy the .uf2 from micropython.org to the RPI-RP2 drive (or use Thonny’s install button).
- 2
Select the interpreter
Tools → Options → Interpreter → MicroPython (Raspberry Pi Pico) or MicroPython (ESP32), then pick the COM port or “Try to detect automatically”.
- 3
Do not stay in BOOTSEL mode
If the board shows as a drive, it is in bootloader mode. Unplug and replug without holding BOOTSEL.
- 4
Close other serial programs
Arduino IDE, another Thonny window or a browser serial tool can hold the port.
- 5
Use a data cable
Charge-only cables give the same symptom.
Why it happens
Bootloader mode
In BOOTSEL mode the Pico is a USB drive, not a serial device, so Thonny cannot find a REPL.
Board running Arduino or C firmware
Without MicroPython there is no REPL to connect to; reinstall MicroPython.
Driver (ESP32)
ESP32 boards need their USB-serial driver — see COM port not showing.
Board-specific notes
Raspberry Pi Pico: If the RPI-RP2 drive does not appear either, see Pico drive not showing.
