Fix ESP32-CAM “PSRAM ID read error” / psramFound() false

The ESP32 cannot see its external PSRAM, so high-resolution camera frames fail. Enable PSRAM in the board settings and check power.

The ESP32-CAM relies on external PSRAM for camera frame buffers. If the core is built without PSRAM support, or the chip does not answer, camera initialisation fails with an out-of-memory error.

Quick fix — try in order

  1. 1

Choose a board with PSRAM enabled

Tools → Board → AI Thinker ESP32-CAM (PSRAM enabled), or ESP32 Wrover Module, or set Tools → PSRAM → Enabled.

  2. 2

    Re-upload after changing the setting

PSRAM support is compiled into the firmware; the change only takes effect after uploading again.

  3. 3

    Check 5 V power

PSRAM fails to initialise on a sagging supply. Use 5 V 2 A.

  4. 4

Lower the frame size to test

Without PSRAM, only small frames (QVGA) fit in internal RAM — useful to confirm the rest works.

Why it happens

What is PSRAM?

An extra 4 MB RAM chip on the ESP32-CAM, needed to hold full-size camera frames. The ESP32 has only about 320 KB of internal RAM.

Board without PSRAM

Some cheap ESP32-CAM clones ship without the PSRAM chip. Check the board: it is the small 8-pin chip next to the module.

0x101 camera error

ESP_ERR_NO_MEM — the camera driver could not allocate frame buffers, typically because PSRAM is missing or disabled.
